Sankara Nethralaya, are engaged in providing quality oriented, state-of-the-art eye care, not only to the people of India but also to the people of neighbouring countries. A hallmark of Sankara Nethralaya is the Community Service rendered by the institution to the rural indigent. Through the use of Tele-ophthalmology, we have reached out to people in remote villages who have no other means of accessing quality eye care. Sankara Nethralaya is well recognized for teaching and training an army of people to combat blindness. We are one of the very few institutions engaged in Ophthalmic Research, both Clinical research and Basic Science Research in Ophthalmology, Optometry and Laboratory Sciences.

Started in 1978 with just a single ophthalmologist, today we have grown into a 1200 people strong organization that stands as a pioneer in Ophthalmic Care, Ophthalmic Training, and Ophthalmic Research. Each day over 1500 patients are seen in our Out patient department and over 120 surgeries are carried out at the hospital. At any point of time, nearly 200 students in various ophthalmic streams – Ophthalmology, Optometry, Medical Laboratory Technology, Basic Sciences and Ophthalmic Nursing – undergo training at Sankara Nethralaya. We carry out cutting edge research in Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pathology and Nanotechnology.

 The success of Sankara Nethralaya is largely due to the support of friends and well-wishers, who have contributed selflessly towards the hospital. As a not for profit organization, Sankara Nethralaya has looked towards society to support it. And over the last 35 years, many individuals and organizations have contributed towards the growth and success of the hospital.

 During the Silver Jubilee year 2002-2003 of Sankara Nethralaya, the SANKARA RATNA AWARD was instituted. This award recognizes and honors an individual or organization each year that has supported and contributed to Nethralaya’s cause and philosophy. The past recipients of this award are Mr. V. Shankar, Chairman, South India Educational Society, Mumbai, Mr. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman, Tata Group, Mr. A. M. Naik, Chairman and Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Mr. S.V. Acharya, Honorary Treasurer, Sankara Nethralaya Ophthalmic Mission Trust Inc, USA (SNOM Trust), Dr. Madhavan Nair, Director, Indian Space Research Organization, Mr. Hanuman Prasad Agarwal, Kolkata and Sri S.P. Muthuraman, Film Director.

This year – 2013  the Nethralaya is  proud to bestow this award on Dr. T.V. Subramanian a specialist in Operations and Supply Management, Total Quality Management, IT, Data Mining and Strategic Management and Shri M.S.Jayaraman an expert in IT, Business Process Engineering, Deeper Learning and Systems thinking. Sankara Nethralaya benefited immensely from the collective experience and expertise of these two veteran Consultants whose guidance and training helped in streamlining its processes and enhancing its systems. This resulted in improving overall operational efficiency, helped in complying with the norms laid down by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) the highest evaluation body for hospitals and healthcare providers and subsequent accreditation of the Chennai Main centre by this prestigious body.

 

6th September 2013 is the Sankara Nethralaya`s 35th Foundation day and this happy occasion this award to be given to Dr TVS and Dr MSJ.
