Sankara Nethralaya, which honours distinguished individuals with Sankara Ratna Award for their determined support to the hospital on the founder’s day, every year since 2002, instituted one more category of award – M S Subbulakshmi Award, in memory of the legendary singer who rendered her service by raising funds for Sankara Nethralaya through her concerts.

The award was recently presented to those who espoused the cause of Sankara Nethralaya in serving people and have been supportive in its initiatives.  The recipients of this award were—Kausalya Appukutty, a prime supporter of Sankara Nethralaya, who donated four acres of land to run the Elite School of Optometry, to the hospital, and Manohar Devadoss, an artist who has made plain canvases colourful, in spite of his partial visual impairment.
He has been raising money for Sankara Nethralaya’s community service through ‘Mahima Endowment,’ which he started in the memory of his wife Mahima, with an aim to provide treatment to visually-impaired children.

The Sankara Ratna Award was conferred upon two ‘Quality Gurus,’ as they are referred to by the Sankara Nethralaya family —  M S Jayaraman, a specialist in IT strategies and Business process Reengineering, and T V Subramanian, a specialist in Operation, Supply chain Management and IT strategies.

These two were pioneers in building Sankara Nethralaya as a National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers (NABH), which is the highest recognition for healthcare providers.

The awards were presented by chief guest Governor K Rosaiah, who lauded the unconditional service by Sankara Nethralaya all these years, and congratulated the winners.

“Sankara Nethralaya deserves to be appreciated for its undeterred humanitarian service to the people by giving them sight. Service should be provided from the heart with a joy like S S Badrinath does,” said Rosaiah referring to the founder of Sankara Nethralaya.
