His long tenure at Sankara Nethralaya was marked by watershed achievements in diverse areas and his move to Deepam Hospital (a multi speciality) marks a step from a single specialty hospital to the greater challenges of a multi-specialty hospital.

An academician par excellence Shri A Mahalingam has impressive academic credentials in diverse areas such as Hospital Management, Operations Management, Training &Development from reputed educational institutions like LIBA, IGNOU, BITS, Pilani to name a few besides attending and as well as organizing  high profile Total Quality Management programs, seminars and training sessions.

He has donned several caps during his long tenure at Sankara Nethralaya and has brought a glorious feather to all of them. While his professional achievements in diverse areas like enhancing patient inflow, improving patient satisfaction levels, employee productivity, revenue, Total quality Management are noteworthy he also played a major role in building a strong rapport and goodwill with the Media, stakeholders, government and NGO agencies and the outside world at large.  While his professional excellence and achievements would make a long list, what endeared him to the management and colleagues at all levels is his utmost humility, transparency, team spirit, the attitude to lead from the front, set a fine personal example, own responsibility and share the credit for success with team mates.

Serving directly under the legendary (Founder of Sankara Nethralaya Padma Bhusan) Dr. SS.Badrinath, whom he considers his guide and mentor left an indelible impact on his work ethics and made him imbibe the qualities of service and compassion the hallmark of Sankara Nethralaya.

As the Chief Operating officer of Deepam Hospitals his major challenge would be in enhancing existing systems and processes, increasing visibility, reaching out to corporate entities, creating a strong brand image and goodwill for the institution, setting up the academic and research arms and positioning Deepam as a preferred healthcare destination for domestic and overseas patients in a highly competitive healthcare marketplace.

Introduction:

As an educational institution in the fore front of imparting knowledge and learning through learning and training initiatives, topical seminars and sharing of best practices and rich experience of more than a 4 decades of health care delivery, the Sankara Nethralaya Academy is conducting a high power seminar on ‘Accreditation for Hospitals’ a high priority area for health care providers.

The seminar is meant to educate and create awareness among health care managers, healthcare entrepreneurs currently operating their own health care institutions and individuals and corporate bodies planning to enter into this fast growing and high potential field.
The seminar would educate participants on the need and distinct advantages of being accredited, both from the point of creating a high reputation and image leading to high public esteem and confidence and also for the purpose of tie-ups with insurance providers etc. Accreditation by premier bodies like the NABH places Indian health care providers on par with the best of class hospitals in the world, which makes them a highly preferred health care destination for overseas patients too.
The accreditation seminar would cover the entire gamut of quality and work flow processes and practices both clinical and non-clinical and also minute details like employee educational credentials to advanced equipment imperative for accreditation by prestigious certifying bodies both national and international. Accreditation increases the standard of hospitals in India and supports them to provide world class treatment to patients which will gradually boost Medical Tourism in India. It would bring in both the self-paying patients who choose hospitals on their own and the second category of patients who select hospitals through their agency or third party, accreditation brings in the much needed credibility as it symbolizes quality, it helps in branding of the hospital, enhances hospital value and reliability making India truly a great Medical Tourism destination.

I congratulate Sankara Nethralaya Academy for rendering yeomen service by Hon'ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar

I congratulate Sankara Nethralaya Academy for rendering yeomen service by Hon'ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar

It gives me great pleasure to be amidst you at this meeting of the Parliamentary Forum on Population and Public Health. This Forum provides a platform for the Hon’ble members to interact with Ministers concerned, experts and key officials from nodal Ministries. The discussions here are invaluable in understanding pertinent issues more deeply, creating awareness and preparing future strategies. Today Dr. Tarun Sharma of Sankara Nethralay Academy will be making a presentation on 'Combating Blindness in India'.

As per the Rapid assessment of Blindness survey conducted in 2006-07, about one percent of our population is suffering from blindness.  The National Programme for the Control of Blindness, started in the year 1976, seeks to reduce this prevalence of blindness to 0.3 per cent through identification and treatment of blind, developing human resource for this purpose, improving quality of service delivery and securing participation of voluntary organisations in eye care. However, government’s initiatives alone are not sufficient and need to be supplemented by doctors, private hospitals, non-governmental organizations and self help groups.  All the stakeholders have to collectively strive to light a ray of hope in the lives of those who live in darkness.

I congratulate Sankara Nethralaya Academy for rendering yeomen service for combating blindness in India.  ‘Excellence through Knowledge’ as I have learnt, is their moto. To fulfill this, they are reaching out to people, spreading knowledge and creating awareness.  Let me take this opportunity to compliment each and every person at the Academy especially Dr. S.S. Badrinath, Dr. Tarun Sharma, Dr. Vasanthi Badrinath and Dr. S. Bhaskaran for their dedication, initiative and research which has allowed many to see this beautiful world.  I am convinced that the Academy, under the guidance of these eminent personalities, will continue to serve the people in the years to come.

In our society, visual impairment is largely looked upon as a disability of an individual. I firmly believe that the differently abled persons have unique abilities and are as capable as anyone else but it is the social prejudices, structures and practices which inhibit them from realizing their full potential. Therefore, we have to transform our mindsets and focus on creating a conducive environment for them to achieve excellence. Reorientation of laws and policies, together with a change in societal attitudes towards the visually impaired, is the need of the hour.

I am confident that today’s deliberations on ‘Combating Blindness in India’ will be instrumental in enabling us to gain an insight into this problem. These inputs will be critical for not only discussing governmental policies and initiatives but also for recommending corrective measures.  I hope that the future meetings of this very important Forum will come out with valuable suggestions and recommendations on this issue of concern to all of us.

Thank you.

Hon'ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar
