About Sankara Nethralaya
Sankara Nethralaya is one of the leading super
speciality institutions for ophthalmic care in India. Sankara Nethralaya, meaning
“The Temple of the Eye”, was founded in 1978 as a unit of Medical Research
Foundation. It is a charitable, not-for-profit institution. Located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Sankara
Nethralaya has grown tremendously since its commencement— thanks to the
unconditional and generous support received from all quarters of society — and
has gained international excellence for its quality and affordable eye care
services. Its goals include providing quality ophthalmic care at affordable
cost to patients, free eye care treatment to indigent patients and teaching and
training an army of personnel to combat blindness affecting the population of India. Today, the institute has over 90 eye care
professionals examining around 1,500 patients and performing around 125
surgeries every day.
Over the last 3 decades, the academic activities of
Sankara Nethralaya encompassed Ophthalmology, Optometry, Nursing and Medical
Laboratory Technology. The Ophthalmology. Post-graduate educational programs at
C. U. Shah – Ophthalmic Post-Graduate Training Center, Sankara Nethralaya,
Medical Research Foundation is recognized by Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical
University and offers a two year Diploma course in Ophthalmology. Likewise the
National board of examinations New
Delhi has recognized the institution for a 3- year
graduate training program in Ophthalmology known as a Diplomate of National
Board of Examinations. We are also recognized for the PhD in Ophthalmology
program of the local university.
To provide excellent academic teaching and training
in optometry the Elite School of Optometry was founded in the year 1985 and a
few years later the Rural
Eye Hospital
was set up in St Thomas Mount, Chennai. The curriculum spanning 4 years is
modeled after the Bachelors in Optometry program offered by university of
California Berkley, California USA. The Master’s degree in Laboratory
Technology MS (MLT) and the Ophthalmic Assistant Program BSOA also recognized
by BITS Pilani and are offered at the main campus. In medical laboratory
technology, we offer MS MLT (a graduate program) and PhD, both courses
affiliated to BITS Pilani.
The Medical and Vision Research Foundations have
been recognized by national and international agencies for providing
educational and training programs. They are namely Sir Ratan Tata Foundation,
Mumbai; Orbis International, US; The Carl Zeiss, Germany
and The Bausch & Lomb of USA.
The Lions International Foundation has given two major grants and supports the
community services. Like wise the Tulsi Trust has donated and also supports the
rural outreach program.
Sankara Nethralaya was one of the institutions
chosen by the Government of India for the “Trainers Training Programme’ for
alleviation of cataract blindness in the country.
The Sankara
Nethralaya Academy
In January 2010, Sankara Nethralaya decided to
scale up the Academic activities through setting up of “The Sankara Nethralaya
Academy”. The Academy would function as a unit of Medical Research Foundation.
The SN Academy is avowed to employ a system of educating people imparting
knowledge through instruction courses, training classes, and usher in newer
training/teaching methodologies including the use of IT. The objective is to

About the Medical University:
The
Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University
is the only Government
Medical University
in Tamil Nadu capable of granting affiliation to new medical and paramedical

DISSERTATION:
All candidates
admitted to undergo Post-Graduate Degree in MBA course shall be assigned a topic
for dissertation / Thesis by the head of the concerned Unit and the title of
the topics assigned to the candidates be intimated to the Controller of
Examinations of this University by the Head of the Department through the Head
of the Institution before the end of 1st year of the course.
Degree Awarded by:
On successful completion of the
course, the certificate will be awarded by The
Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
