The most eagerly awaited seminar on Hospital Management organized by the Sankara Nethralaya Academy was held on the 5th of January 2013 at the Sri VD.Swami Auditorium. The attendance both in terms of numbers and profile was a clear indication that the Sankara Nethralaya academy had cut a niche as a highly rated knowledge dissemination centre. Shrimathi Akila Ganesan, Senior General manger, Sankara Nethralaya and Registrar of the Sankara Nethralaya Academy flagged off the day’s deliberation with a warm welcome address, an interesting note on the need for teaching and training initiatives in an organization and a quick and lively intro of the day’s speakers. This was followed by an introduction of Professor Bala Balachandran who was delivering the Key note address by Dr KS.Vasan, Managing Director, Sankara Nethralaya.

Obama names Indian-American Rangaswamy Srinivasan for prestigious award

Washington: Indian-American Rangaswamy Srinivasan, a renowned inventor at IBM, has been nominated by the US President Barack Obama for the prestigious National Medal of Technology for Innovation.

Along with Srinivasan, Obama named 12 eminent researchers as recipients of the National Medal of Science and 10 extraordinary inventors as recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honors bestowed by the United States Government upon scientists, engineers, and inventors.

The recipients will receive their awards at a White House ceremony in early 2013.

In 1981, Srinivasan discovered that an ultraviolet excimer laser could etch living tissue in a precise manner with no thermal damage to the surrounding area. He named the phenomenon Ablative Photo-decomposition (APD).

"I am proud to honor these inspiring American innovators" Obama said.

"They represent the ingenuity and imagination that has long made this Nation great and they remind us of the enormous impact a few good ideas can have when these creative qualities are unleashed in an entrepreneurial environment," the US president said.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was created by statute in 1980 and is administered for the White House by the US Department of Commerce's Patent and Trademark Office.

Vision 2020 conducts a major workshop on eliminating avoidable blindness

It is said that a work well begun is half completed, the high profile and enthusiastic participation of a cross section of eminent personalities representing the government, NGO’s, Health care providers and senior members of the Press at the recently held seminar ‘Media and its role in Eliminating Avoidable Blindness” organized by the India chapter of Vision 2020, facilitated by Joseph Eye Hospital and hosted by Sankara Nethralaya was a clear indication of the beginning of a strong and strategic alliance with the media that would take awareness on eye care to the next level.

The one day function and deliberations held at the Sri VD.Swami Auditorium, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai on 10th December 2012 provided the ideal platform to discuss the various issues pertaining to eye care and spreading awareness on the same. The observations made by the eminent participants both in their addresses and the spirited panel discussion that followed helped in bringing forth their view points, thrashing out differences and evolving a strong and collective strategy to combat blindness by spreading awareness on eye care and to mobilize support for such initiatives from corporate bodies and the general public.

Dr NK Agarwal, deputy director general, National Program for ontrol of Blindness (NPCB) highlighted the importance and roll of NPCB and its role in eliminating blindness in India.

The spontaneous response to the clarion call made by Vision 2020 and active participation by senior members of the media like Shri N.Ram, Former Editor-in-chief of ‘The Hindu’, Shri Arun Ram, Senior Editor, The Times of India, Shri Rengarajan J , Senior Correspondent, Dinamani, Shrimathi Aarthi Dhar, Senior Assistant Editor, Delhi Bureau of ‘The Hindu’, Shri SN.Kulkarni, Former Editor, Sakaal and Advisor, Kesari, Maharashtra, Dr Neeraja Prabhakar, Programme Executive from the All India Radio and many more journalists was a clear indication that it was the beginning of a great new chapter in creating awareness on eye care with the tremendous reach and power of the Fourth Estate.

World’s leading helping hand honours the services of a compassionate helping hand

The Lion’s Club of Central Madras and the Lion’s club of Annai District jointly celebrated ‘United Nation’s Day’ in a grand manner at the Benz Park Hotel, Chennai. The proceedings included a fellowship, meeting and distribution of awards followed by dinner. The awards were distributed by the Chief Guest Dr Stefan Weckbach, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany. The event witnessed the honouring of Shri A.Mahalingam, Academic Officer, Sankara Nethralaya Academy with the ‘Helping Hand’ award for spreading education in general and eye care in particular and building strong Para medical skills in a most innovative and interesting manner.
