People’s judge takes train home after last day at work

"Justice K Chandru is to the judiciary, what Donald Bradman is to cricket." This is what a young labour law specialist commented, reacting to the retirement of Madras high court's Justice Chandru, who disposed over 96,000 cases in less than seven years. At the end of his last day in office on Friday, Justice Chandru met acting Chief Justice R K Agrawal and submitted a copy of his 'voluntary declaration of assets'.

After returning to his chambers, he signed some papers brought by the court registry personnel, before slipping into a khadi kurta and dhoti and trekking down towards the press room, where he spent a few happy moments answering queries from journalists.

He then walked across NSC Bose Road to join a group of his old friends, waiting at Sangeetha restaurant, to have coffee with them. He then reached the Beach Station and boarded a suburban MRTS train bound for Velacherry. "I will get down at Greenways Road station and walk home. I have purchased a monthly season ticket.

As I am a senior citizen, it cost me only Rs 105," he told TOI. It was a farewell of sorts, as by the time he emerged out of the high court gate, Justice Chandru was being followed by about 150 advocates and others, jostling to get close and capture every word he uttered.

While he was on NSC Bose Road, many platform-dwellers, vendors and rickshaw-pullers, who were once represented in court by 'advocate Chandru', came rushing and greeted him with a 'Vanakkam'. He discouraged a rickshaw man from following him, and curtly told him to go and do his business.

Earlier, when reporters asked him about his 'prescription' for reducing the huge pendency of cases in courts, Justice Chandru said, "One, lawyers should not boycott courts. Two, they should not take adjournments unnecessarily. Three, they must come to court after reading the case and laws."

As for his post-retirement plans, the judge said he would engage himself in social work and offer law-related assistance to the needy sections of society. Declaring that he never felt bad about any order he had passed during his stint, Justice Chandru said not reaching the 1-lakh mark too did not bother him.

"It is a mere number. I have discharged the constitutional duty entrusted to me with utmost sincerity and satisfaction," he said.

Chennai: Justice K. Chandru retired on Friday after serving sev­en years as judge of the Ma­d­ras high court. Justice Ch­andru walked to the nearest railway station, hopped on to an MRTS and reached home, leaving behind the ke­ys of the official car with acting chief justice R. K. Ag­r­awal and final hand-shake.

A group of his friends and admirers walked with him from the Madras high court to the beach station chatting with him. Justice Chandru had declared the assets he possessed when he was appointed as a judge and the assets he possess now at the time of his reti­r­ement. “After retirement, I will serve for the public cause as an advocate”, said Justice Cha­n­dru.

On his last day as judge, Justice Chandru said in order to bring down the pendency of cases, advocates should not resort to boycott and seek adjournments, but do their home work and argue their case in courts.

After having spent his sevens years as judge of the Madras high court as a role model for others, Justice K. Chandru avoided the ‘traditional’ farewell tea and five-star dinner when he demitted office on Friday.

In a letter dated February 8, 2013, to acting chief justice R K Agrawal, Justice Chandru had requested him not to order the farewell ritual for him, as he would like to leave office quietly.

Justice Chandru had said in his letter, “I will be happy if 8th March, 2013, passes off as any other day in this Court.”

Unperturbed by the boycott by advocates, Justice Chandru sat in the court hall and completed the cases listed before him. After office hours, he met acting chief justice R. K. Agrawal, handed over the charge and official car key, besides declaring his assets.

After arriving at his chamber, he met his old friends and advocates. He emerged out of his chamber, clad in white dhoti and brown cotton shirt, calmed down and headed straightto the Press room, situated on the first floor of the high court. He had a free wheeling chat over a cup of coffee with scribes and recalled judgments like empowering women to perform poojas in temple and reservation for dalits in noon meals centre jobs that remained etched in his memory.

Thereafter, accompanied by his friends, he took a stroll to Beach station and reached home by MRTS.

The judge had already dispensed with the practice of his duffedar carrying a mace and walking in front when he went to the court and returned to the chamber.

He also sent back his gun-toting PSO (personal security officer) and at home, did not want official servants. A notice was pasted at the entrance of his chamber stating “No deities—no Flowers, no one is hungry-no Fruits, none is shivering—no shawls. We need only best wishes.”

Sri City signs MoU with Sankara Nethralaya for the hospital

Sullurpet: Sri City, South India’s largest integrated business city, on Saturday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Medical Research Foundation (Sankara Nethralaya) to establish an eye care hospital and research facility in the Sri City.

Dr Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath, with a group of philanthropists, founded the Sankara Nethralaya, a charitable not-for-profit eye hospital on the advice of Sri Jayendra Saraswati in the year 1978. The main objective of the hospital is to provide affordable and world class eye care facilities to the people. Sri City Sankara Nethralaya, as the hospital would be called, will commence its services within the next three months with a 20 bed hospital and an operation theatre.

It would be developed gradually into a full-fledged specialty eye care hospital, spread over 10 acres within the next three years. Dr SS Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya said, “We are happy to be associated with Sri City. We intend to set up the eye care hospital and ensure quality and affordable eye care services to the poor and needy. As the full-fledged eye care hospital is expected to be completed in a period of 3 years, any complicated surgeries that require post-surgery backup can be offered by Sankara Nethralaya Chennai till then.”

With the launch of the eye care hospital in Sri City, the local people who seek treatment elsewhere will not be required to travel till Chennai and can opt for quality care near their doorstep. Furthermore, quick post-surgery treatment and minimal travelling will ensure the local people who seek treatment to reduce the risk of infections.

Sankara Nethralaya pays its deep condolence to its founding father - Shri C.U Shah

It was a solemn occasion on the 3rd February 2013 as the members of the Sankara Nethralaya family gathered to pay their homage to Shri C.U Shah one of Sankara Nethralaya’s earliest supporters and the man who was instrumental in its inception. The homage to the departed soul started with an interesting video presentation and commentary by Dr TS. Surendran, Vice-Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya capturing the memorable moments of Shri C.U Shah’s association with the institution he helped in founding and nurtured with love.

Chairman Emeritus Sankara Nethralaya and close friend of Shri CU Shah Dr SS.Badrinath gave a most interesting and emotional account of his association with Shri CU Shah and his role in making his dream and passion a reality. He took the audience back to year 1977 when he chanced to hear from his good friend Dr Mani that an entrepreneur and philanthropist by the name C.U Shah is in the city in connection with a donation he is making to the Andhra Mahila Sabha, Dr Mani had suggested that it would be a good idea for Dr SS.Badrinath to approach this gentleman for his proposed eye care project as he seemed to be inclined towards helping non-profits especially in the field of healthcare and the huge contribution of rupees 10 lakhs that he received from Shri C.U Shah although he expressed his inability to name the facility after him as the name had already been finalized. Dr Badrinath recalled with pride that subsequently the Post graduate training centre was named in his honour as the C.U Shah Ophthalmic Post graduate training centre, he congratulated the students of the institution for having lived up to the expectations of its founder donor and for having spread out to all parts of the country and rendering excellent service. He closed his address on an emotional note that with the demise of Shri CU Shah he had lost a very dear friend and Sankara Nethralaya, the institution he helped in founding has lost a great supporter and well wisher and a request to everyone gathered to pray for the departed soul.

Speaking on the occasion Shri V.Vaidyanathan, Former Chairman and Board Member Sankara Nethralaya described Shri CU Shah as the founding father of Sankara Nethralaya and a good friend of Dr SS.Badrinath. He recalled that as the Treasurer he had approached Shri CU Shah several times for donations and had always received generous support and rich advice from him, he recalled his observation that it was not advisable to depend on any single donor for all of one’s needs. He expressed pride that Shri CU Shah had always looked upon Sankara Nethralaya as a role model and was very happy that his money was being put to best use. Shri Vaidyanathan closed his address with the observation that in the demise of Shri CU Shah the country has lost a donor who had a passion for alleviating the suffering of the poor, Sankara Nethralaya a guide and supporter and Dr SS.Badrinath a truly great friend.

This was followed by an address by a senior representative of the Gujarathi Swetanbar Sthanakwasi, expressing his deep gratitude to Shri CU Shah for his generous and continuous donations which had helped in starting the CU Shah clinic and diagnostic centre, CU Shah Centre for alternative medicine & therapy and the CU Shah dialysis centre, he remarked that the members of their association invoke the name of Shri CU Shah more than they invoke God’s name. Speaking on the occasion Shri AP Irungovel, the man who served as the first manager of the eye bank recalled Shri CU Shah’s support in setting up the same and the role of Shri RC Parikh the manager of the CU Shah Charitable Trust in creating awareness on eye donation and ceaseless efforts in mobilizing cornea for which there was total dependence on Sri Lanka in those days. This was followed by the screening of the video of Shri CU Shah’s address to the Post graduate students during his final visit to Sankara Nethralaya in year 2009, his observations that Sankara Nethralaya is the fairest hospital in the entire world and the pride of South India drew a huge applause from the audience

The condolence meeting came to an end with the attendees paying floral tributes and observing a minute of silence in respect of the departed soul.
