The Sankara Nethralaya Academy (TSNA) is offering a certificate course in hospital management. This will help in overall understanding of management issues and concepts by mid-level and senior managers to help them make well–informed decisions. It will also improve leadership quality and equip them with effective team building techniques.

Course duration is 12 weekends (Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m.) and individuals in the supervisory or managerial positions in hospitals and related health care institutions can apply. The course contents comprises Customer Service, Hospital Accreditations & TQM, Supply Chain Management, HR in Health Care, Health care Laws, IT and Health care, Health Insurance & Claims Management, Housekeeping & Waste Management, Training & Developments.

The course commences on February 2. The last date for submitting the duly filled in Registration form is on 5^th January 2013

Doctors of Sankara Nethralaya are part of international group that conducted research

Scientists at Sankara Nethralaya are part of an international group that has discovered three genetic locations associated with a form of glaucoma common in the Asian population.

The study, which has been ongoing for the last 10 years, sought to find explanations for why only some people with the susceptibility go on to develop the disease.

The results were published in a recent issue of Nature Genetics. Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma (PACG) is common in people of Indian and Chinese descent. An estimated 15 million people afflicted with PACG live in Asia. It is also said to be responsible for a substantial proportion of blindness in many Asian countries.

The team from Sankara Nethralaya Vision Research Foundation, headed by L.Vijaya, who also heads the glaucoma division, and comprising Ronnie George, Sripriya Sarangapani and Nagaswamy Soumittra, worked with the international team to narrow in on the specific gene mutations responsible for PACG. This form of glaucoma arises from high pressure in the eye, hindering drainage from it.

“There is a pre-disease phase in glaucoma, in PACG, where the condition is remediable. But what we have also seen is that not everyone who has pre-disease goes on to develop glaucoma,” explains Dr. Ronnie George, senior consultant, Glaucoma, and research director.

Only a percentage of this suspect group develops glaucoma. “In India, there are about 24 million people above the age of 40 who are susceptible. But it will be unnecessary to begin blanket treatment for all.”

Therefore, research began to identify the risk factors which predict who will progress on to glaucoma.

“PACG runs in families, so we began looking at families to identify gene mutations accounting for the disease. But that was not successful, because multiple genes were involved and this is a complex disease.”

“The best thing is a genome-wide analysis. When the Human Genome Project mapped all the genes, it provided markers for the genes (in the single-nucleotide polymorphism). These are like milestones on the road. We also know which genes are close to which milestone, so by tracking the milestone/marker, we get at the gene,” explains Dr. George.

Researchers then compared the milestones among patients with the disease, and those who are normal to identify those that are different, to zero in on these three genetic locations. It is likely that these are associated with an increased risk for the disease.”

“In order to confirm, we tested for the same in a second group of patients, also with the disease. Only if we see it in both groups can we say for sure that there is a link,” according to Dr. George. These however, account only for about 10 per cent of the disease.

It is necessary to identify at least 15 gene mutations that will hold for all cases of PACG, he adds.

Medical Secretary Course from Sankara Nethralaya Academy

Greetings from the Sankara Nethralaya Academy!

 

As you are aware, the founding objects of the Medical Research Foundation were to provide quality ophthalmic care, at affordable cost to the patient, provide quality and totally free eye care to the indigent in the community, teach and train an army of personnel to combat blindness affecting the population of India and engage in India relevant eye research.

 

Over the last 3 decades, the academic activities of Sankara Nethralaya encompassed Ophthalmology, Optometry, Nursing and Medical Laboratory Technology. In January 2010, Sankara Nethralaya decided to scale up the Academic activities through setting up of “The Sankara Nethralaya Academy”. The Sankara Nethralaya Academy would function as a unit of Medical Research Foundation. The SN Academy is avowed to employ a system of educating people imparting knowledge through instruction courses, training classes, and usher in newer training/teaching methodologies including the use of IT. The objective is to teach courses that deal with A to Z in healthcare services. 

 

As part of the SN Academy, Certificates and fellowships programmes of various durations would be awarded at the end of successful completion of different courses. Importance to practical training would be of utmost importance definitely necessitating smaller number of students per class and longer duration of courses. Both Distance education programme and residential form of education would be imparted.

 

In order to train medical secretaries in performing highly specialized secretarial duties, the Sankara Nethralaya Academy offers a ‘Short Term Course in Medical Secretary.’ The course will train medical secretaries to schedule appointments, file bills for patients, compile medical charts and reports and handle correspondence. The course will enable secretaries to understand the nuances of writing reports, articles, billing, insurance and order supplies.

 

 

By the end of the course, a medical secretary will possess a cornucopia of skills and be a good communicator. A secretarial position within the medical profession is the best of both worlds for some - a responsible office job plus the satisfaction of being involved with people’s health and possibly even contact with patients. That’s why specialist Medical Secretarial jobs are very well regarded.

 

Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, introduction to Hospital Management & information system, Communication skills, Public Relations, case studies, telephonic etiquettes and rotation postings of various supportive service departments will be handled during the course.  The students also will be rotated for various multi speciality hospitals for the training and clinical experience and observations.

 

The course will be of 3 month duration. The students will receive a Certificate if they successfully complete the program and the examination at the end of the program.

 

The 3^rd batch of the same will be commencing from First week of February 2013.

Greetings from Sankara Nethralaya Academy !

I would at the outset like to express my sincere thanks to the Lion’s club of central Madras, the organizers of this momentous function – United Nations Day celebrations yesterday with the chief Guest Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany.

There cannot be a greater honour than being honoured as a‘Helping Hand’ by the world’s largest and most munificent helping hand the ‘Lions club’ and today the joy is doubled when the honour is being bestowed by its illustrious chapter the ‘Lion’s club of central Madras’ who have been members of the extended Sankara Nethralaya family and one of its strongest supporters and well-wishers since its inception.

I would like to highlight today that acquisition and dissemination of knowledge was a holy command and divine will of our patron Saint the Sankaracharya of Kanchi to whom we owe our inception and growth, it is one of the founding pillars of Sankara Nethralaya.

Our founder and Chairman Emeritus and chief mentor of us has always emphasized his belief in enlightening, empowering and enablingthrough the transfer of knowledge and that the only way to take the good work of spreading eye care forward is by building an army of qualified, knowledgeable and dedicated personnel. The Vidyasagar Institute of Biomedical sciences, the Elite school of optometry, the CU shah Post graduate training center and the Sankara Nethralaya Academy are manifestations of his firm belief and deep conviction towards the cause of education.

It is most fulfilling to note that after 3 decades of its inception Sankara Nethralaya has stood up to its promise of acquiring and disseminating knowledge and fulfilling the holy command of the Sage of Kanchi. I am proud to say that today SN is not only looked upon as a world class eye care centre delivering eye care with passion and a personal touch but also a knowledge centre and seat of learning. I consider it a rare privilege to have had the opportunity to play a humble role in the academic endeavors of this great institution.

I take this opportunity to thank my HOD and Registrar of the SN academy Ms Akila Ganesan for her unstinted support and guidance in discharging my duties as the ‘Academic officer’ and my gratitude to SN management - Chairman and our Guru and leading light in all our endavours, Dr S S B - Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya.

Andhra Bank steps into its 90th year with a thoughtful gesture

Andhra Bank steps into its 90th year with a thoughtful gesture

Andhra Bank, among India’s fast growing nationalized banks with a countrywide presence stepped into its 90th year of operation on the 29th of November 2012. The significance of the day was captured by the opening of 90 branches and 90 ATM’s all over the country. As an institution with a strong social commitment, the bank decided to mark the special day with an act of ‘giving back to society’. The Zonal Manager, Chennai Shri C.Doraswamy accompanied by Shri S.Ramanathan, Deputy Manager (PR) visited Sankara Nethralaya on the 90th foundation Day and presented a significant amount to the institution, the cheque was received by Dr S.Bhaskaran, Chairman and Dr SS.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya. The senior bank executives were profusely thanked by the senior management members and honoured with a shawl and presented with a copy of ‘Insight’ a biography of Sankara Nethralaya.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Doraswamy expressed his delight at the opportunity to participate in Sankara Nethralaya’s noble social initiative, he observed that this was a good beginning and as the CSR budget for the bank had just been allotted they could explore more funding opportunities in the future. Dr S.Bhaskaran recalled that Andhra Bank was the first official banker to Sankara Nethralaya as the Medical Research Foundation had its first account with it when Shri V.Mohan Rao was its President and his good friend Shri Krishna Rao was a senior official with the bank, he added that the bank had made a significant donation during this time. Dr SS.Badrinath gave a brief of the activities of Sankara Nethralaya, its branches and its future plans, he reminisced that his father Sengamedu Srinivasa Rao who served as a civil engineer with the erstwhile Madras Presidency was involved in the construction of the Andhra Bank’s first branch in Chennai at Parry’s.

The meeting ended on a positive note with Dr SS.Badrinath inviting the Andhra bank to be the Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya’s brand ambassador.
